Matthew Grubbs is one of the leading Tri City percussion professionals. He is a graduate of New England Conservatory where he earned his Bachelor’s degree studying with Will Hudgins of the Boston Symphony, and Cleveland State where he completed his Masters in percussion performance with Tom Freer of the Cleveland Orchestra. He was a Tanglewood Music Center Fellow and studied privately with Tim Genis.
Matthew was an active freelance performer in the Great Lakes region from 2004- 2011. He was a contracted section percussionist with the Erie Philharmonic from 2005-2011 and has performed with Opera Cleveland and Michigan Opera Theatre, Canton, Toledo, Youngstown, and Mansfield symphonies in Ohio, the San Antonio Symphony, and the Buffalo Philharmonic.
Matthew has been a regular substitute with the Spokane Symphony since moving to the region in 2012.
Matthew’s teaching skills have been honed through preparing himself and his colleagues for more than 4 dozen professional orchestra auditions on the entire range of orchestral instruments including drum set. During his eight years as drum instructor at Keeney Brothers Music he has built a popular rudimental and drum set based program with an annual drum recital held at the Moscow Church of The Nazarene. Besides drum lessons, Matt offers drum tuning/head changing, drum maintenance, studio recording and video editing.
